Discover how Connectwell is powering the future of vehicle protection with the innovative fuse terminal blocks
November 2023

Introduction

As the electrical and electronic circuits within modern automobiles continue to evolve and grow in complexity, with this evolution the complexity of circuits has also increased. These circuits further need to be protected hence, the number of there is a corresponding rise in the utilization of fuses. This increase is essential to ensure the protection and reliability of these intricate systems.

In the automotive industry, electrical systems are crucial for powering various components and ensuring the safe operation of vehicles. To protect these systems from overcurrent or short circuit conditions, automotive fuse terminal blocks are widely utilized. These specialized terminal blocks are designed to accommodate blade fuses providing a reliable and convenient solution for electrical safety in vehicles.

Different Types of Fuse Terminal Blocks

There are various types of fuse terminal blocks based on the below features:

Types of Fuse Used

Terminal Blocks suitable for Cylindrical type fuses (5x20mm, 5x25mm, and 6.3x32mm) are commonly known as fuse terminal blocks, Class CC-type fuse terminal blocks & Blade Type Automotive fuse terminal blocks.

The cylindrical type fuse terminal blocks are designed for use with standard cylindrical fuses and are widely employed in the power industry. These terminal blocks are also compact & are ideal for tight spaces and ensure proper fuse protection in electrical panels. Similarly, the 5x25mm and 6.3x32mm fuse terminal blocks are tailored to accommodate their respective fuse sizes.

Additional functions

Fuse terminal blocks are also available in single-level and double-level functions.

Connection Technologies

Connectwell offer Fuse Terminal Blocks in Screw, spring and Push-in Connection Technologies

Wire Size

These fuse terminal blocks are available for wire sizes ranging from 0.2sq.mm to up to 10sq.mm

Fuse Rating

Fuse terminals can also be differentiated by the rating of the fuse used. They range from 0.1A to 16A.

Introduction to Automotive Fuse Terminal Blocks
en

Automotive fuse terminal blocks differ from regular cylindrical fuse terminal blocks in their design and functionality. While regular cylindrical fuse terminal blocks are commonly used in general electrical applications, automotive fuse terminal blocks are specifically engineered for automotive systems.

One key difference lies in the additional features incorporated into automotive fuse terminal blocks to enhance their functionality and safety. These features include:

  • Push-type insertion of the fuse makes it very user-friendly and also saves a lot of time while removal of the fuse during the time of troubleshooting or maintenance.
  • Other features also include built-in LED indicators for fuse failure detection,
  • Blade extraction tools for easy fuse replacement.
  • High-temperature resistance to withstand the demanding conditions present in automotive environments.

Working of Automotive Fuse Terminal Blocks

Construction & Ratings

Automotive fuse terminal blocks enable secure connections between the vehicle's electrical system and the components connected to them. The terminal block consists of slots or positions where fuses are inserted, and each slot is designed to securely hold a specific type and size of blade-type automotive fuse.

A typical automotive fuse consists of a small, flatbody made of heat-resistant materials like glass or plastic. Inside this body, there is a thin strip or wire made of a material with a low melting point, often made of zinc, aluminium, or copper. Each fuse is rated for a specific current-carrying capacity, measured in amperes (Amps). This rating is usually printed on the fuse body. For example, a common rating is 10A to 30A. In somecases, automotive fuses have a transparent window or are colour-coded, allowing you to visually inspect them to determine if they have blown. When a fuse blows, the strip or wire inside will be visibly broken or disconnected.

Installation & Working

These terminal blocks are installed in various locations throughout a vehicle's electrical system, typically close to the power source or the component they protect. When a current surge or short-circuit occurs in the circuit, the current passing through the fuse increases.

As the current exceeds the fuse's rated capacity, the thin strip or wire inside the fuse heats up due to the increased resistance. When the current surpasses the fuse's rating, the strip or wire reaches its melting point. When the strip or wire melts, it creates an open circuit, effectively disconnecting the power supply to the protected component or circuit. This break in the circuit prevents excessive current from damaging the wiring, and electrical components, or causing a fire hazard.

Applications

Automotive fuse terminal blocks are widely used in the automotive industry, as well as in various applications in the general transport industry. Some notable applications include:

> Commercial vehicles

> Recreational vehicles

> Agricultural and Construction Equipment

> Marine and boat electrical system

The use of automotive fuse terminal blocks ensures the safety and reliability of electrical systems in these industries, preventing damage to components and potential hazards.
