What does it Take to Assemble 150 Million High Quality Terminal Blocks A Year?

For more than 4 decades now the only thing constant at Connectwell has been change. We have been agile in adapting to changes in technology in our processes, equipment and systems. The assembly process at Connectwell is often deemed ‘simple’ by casual observers. After all, what is so difficult about assembling 5 to 10 small components? Well the challenge has never been about assembling a single terminal block. The challenge lies in assembling more than 150 Million High Quality Terminal Blocks every year.
The very early days - From a few terminal blocks to a few hundreds.
Started by Mr. Vijay Saheta in 1978, Connectwell has its origins in a tiny shop. In these very early days, the same personnel who carried out assembly of products with hand tools one piece after another also inspected the product and also did about five hundred other things. One could say that each terminal block was ‘handcrafted’.
Speeding Up - From a few hundred terminal blocks to a few thousand
As the demand for Connectwell’s products increased, Connectwell started using fixtures and power tools. These changes were made necessary as we needed to ensure that the quality of products was always maintained. Dedicated Assembly and Inspection Teams were organized which started producing a few thousand terminal blocks a day.
Connectwell Today - Assembling more than 500 thousand terminal blocks a day.
Today Connectwell prides itself on use of a variety of channels for assembling its products. We use a variety of processes for assembling our products from the use of simple hand tools for low complexity, low volume products to high speed full automated lines that can not only assemble the products but also test and package the same.
The different types of assembly processes we use are:
> Manual Standardized Work Stations - For Prototyping and Sampling
> Manual Assembly Lines with Asynchronous Transport - For Low Volume, High Complexity Products
> Semi Automated Fixed Assembly Lines - For Medium Volume, High Complexity Products
> Semi Automated Flexible Automation Lines - For Medium Volume, Medium Complexity products
> Fully Automated Assembly Lines - For High Volume Products irrespective of complexity
Way Forward
Connectwell today is working towards further improving such assembly processes by making use of technologies of today like Vision Guided Assembly and Vision Based Quality Control and by use of augmented reality systems for easing manual assembly and quality control process.
Our manufacturing and operations systems remain in a constant state of upgradation as our journey of TPM Continues and we try achieving six sigma goals in certain products and processes.
